Hand colored prints begin life as a hand-pulled black and white reproduction of an antique engraving from as early as the 1400’s, an antique etching from as early as the early 1500’s, or an antique photogravure from the late 1800’s. These reproductions are then individually colored by an artist using the finest quality European watercolor paints. These paints have long-lasting pigment qualities to preserve and increase the value of the print. They are painted in the same methods used before the invention and widespread use of color lithography. Layers of color are used to give each print a unique sense of depth, texture, and vibrancy that cannot be matched by today’s color printing methods. Trendsetting color combinations give these hand colored antique reproductions a stunning brilliance to compliment any home or office needing a touch of something special.

Art.com offers a distinctive selection of hand colored decorative and antique reproduction prints. These prints are meticulously painted by hand in a variety of trendsetting colors chosen specifically to coordinate with the latest in the home furnishings and designer market. With subjects and styles ranging from the very traditional to the whimsical, our hand colored prints ar e unique and affordable pieces of art for the discerning customer.

The traditional art of papermaking has remained virtually the same since it was invented in China almost 2000 years ago. The most important changes have been in the materials. Europeans evolved papermaking by using cotton and linen fibers.
The more cotton and high-quality fibers are present, the stronger the paper. Archival quality paper affects the quality of a print’s color and will age with minimal deterioration due to the use of high quality acid free fibers.
The archival paper on which hand colored prints are printed adds immensely to the value and quality of the print. All of the hand colored prints we offer are printed on a high quality 130 pound cotton rag archival paper. This heavy paper weight and 100% pure cotton content make a difference in the way a print looks, feels and ages.

Hand colored prints deserve special handling to preserve and protect their fine quality. Art.com has developed a custom process designed to protect a hand colored print from the moment it arrives in our facility to the moment it is delivered directly to your door.
We have professional framing specialists, trained and certified by the Professional Picture Framers’ Association, who follow strict framing guidelines. Our shipping personnel and process are carefully monitored to minimize damage before, during and after the artwork leaves our facility.
