Ellen RICHARDS
Among the first women to formally work as a scientist, Ellen Swallow Richards profoundly impacted people's daily lives. A pioneer in the field of sanitary engineering, she also applied scientific principles to domestic life in creating the field of home economics.

1842 Ellen Swallow is born in rural Dunstable, Massachusetts on December 3
1870 - After graduating from Vassar College, Swallow is the first woman allowed to attend classes at the prestigious Massachusetts institute of Technology.
1873-1875 - Analyzes air, water, and sewage for the city of Boston, develops a related curriculum at MIT, and works as its first female faculty member.
1873 - Becomes the first woman in America to earn a degree in chemistry when she receives her B.S. from MIT.
1875 - Marries Robert Hallowell Richards, chair of MIT mining engineering department, and works with him on chemical analysis of ores. Isolates the element Vanadium. Becomes the first woman to serve on a state board of health.
1876 - Richards establishes the Women's Laboratory on the MIT campus to teach basic science to young women.
1887 - Surveys the quality of Massachusetts lakes and rivers polluted with industrial and municipal waste. The work of Richards and her assistants leads to the first state water quality standards in the U.S.
1888 - Co-founds the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
1890 - Establishes the New England Kitchen to educate poor and immigrant families about food safety and nutrition.
1899 - Founds the American Home Economics Association.
1911 Richards dies in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, on March 30.
