Louis PASTEUR French chemist and biologist, Louis Pasteur founded the science of microbiology, proved the germ theory of disease, invented the process of pasteurization, and developed vaccines for several diseases. 1822 Louis Pasteur is born on December 27 in Dole, France. 1844-1846 - Begins chemical and crystallographic studies at the Ecole Normale, in Paris. 1847 - Earns a doctorate, with focus on physics and chemistry. Works on molecular asymmetry, brining together the principles of crystallography, chemistry, and optics. 1849 - Marries Marie Laurent on May 29. 1854 - Is appointed dean and professor of chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences in Lille, France. 1862 - Pasteur's experiments with bacteria disprove the theory of spontaneous generation and lead to the germ theory of infection. 1864 - His experiments with wine fermentation lead to his developing pasteurization, a process by which harmful microbes in perishable food are destroyed using heat. 1865 - His studies of silkworm diseases lead Pasteur to establish basic rules of sterilization. 1880 - Begins his studies on rabies. 1885 - Pasteur tests his rabies treatment on man for the first time. 1888 - The Pasteur Institute is founded as a clinic for rabies treatment, infectious disease research, and as a teaching center. 1888-1895 - As Director of the Institute, Pasteur works on the causes of diseases and their prevention by means of vaccination. 1895 - Louis Pasteur, dies on September 28 near Paris, France. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
