Grace HOPPER A pioneer in the development of computer languages, Grace Hopper played an essential role in developing and standardizing COBOL, which led to widespread use of computers in business, governmental, and science applications. 1906 Grace Murray is born on December 9 in New York, New York. 1913 - She takes apart every alarm clock in her house to find out how they worked. 1928 - Graduates from Vassar College with honors. 1931-1944 - Teaches at Vassar College. 1934 - Earns a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University. 1942 - Hopper joins the U.S. Navy. She is assigned to a team that programs one of the first computers, the Mark I. 1952 - Creates the first compiler, which makes it possible to program a computer to understand language and perform mathematical equations from memory. 1952-1959 - Hopper creates FLOW-MATIC, a programming language. 1959 - Helps to develop COBOL, a standardized programming language. 1966 - Hopper is promoted to the rank of commander in the U.S. Navy 1983 - Promoted to rear admiral, Hopper is the first woman to ever achieve such a high rank. 1986 - Retires from the navy. 1991 - She receives the National Medal of Technology - becoming the first woman to receive the award for individual accomplishment. 1992 Grace Hopper dies on January 1 in Arlington, Virginia. 1994 - Hopper is inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. 1997 - Navy destroyer U.S.S.
