"I would like to be known as a person who is concerned about freedom and equality and justice and prosperity for all people." Described by some as "the mother of the civil rights movement," Rosa Parks is best known for being arrested for refusing to giver
About the Artwork
On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks (1913-2005) embarked on a ride that took the Civil Rights Movement far beyond any bus stop. Arrested for refusing to heed a Montgomery, Alabama segregation ordinance requiring her to relinquish her seat to a white man, Parks triggered the 382-day Montgomery Bus Boycott. The protest resulted in a 1956 Supreme Court ruling desegregating public transportation, and established Parks as a Civil Rights icon. This photo shows Parks riding the bus the day of Montgomery’s transportation system integration, accompanied by a United Press International reporter who covered the event.
