About the Artwork
The spicy heat of chilis suffuses a woman’s contented face and surroundings with a warm, terra cotta glow in Navajo painter R.C. Gorman’s “Chili Fiesta.” Growing up during the Depression in a traditional Navajo hogan, Gorman (1932 – 2005) originally drew in sand, mud, and on rocks. He later achieved international acclaim for his fluid, vibrantly colored paintings of Native American women. Often called “the Picasso of Indian art,” Gorman’s works were strongly influenced by the imagery of Diego Rivera.
