Isolation and loneliness, even when one is not alone, are starkly communicated in the glaring light and eerily noirish shadows, blank faces and downtrodden postures of Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks.” Inspired by a restaurant in New York’s Greenwich Village, Hopper’s unflinching style depicts the sad beings in the diner as together, yet solitary and seperated as well from the viewer by the glass window of the diner. Hopper (1882 – 1967) was an American painter known for his melancholy, realistic depictions of alienation in everyday life which had tremendous impact on pop art, and the representational revival.
