About the Artwork
Like shards of stained glass, the angular elements in the work of virtuoso artist Lyonel Feininger unite and overlap to form stylized, shimmering images. Born in New York City, Feininger (1871 – 1956) excelled at meticulously painted ships, buildings, locomotives and seascapes, fashioned entirely from straight lines and intersecting planes of color and light. Influenced by Cubism and Orphism, Feininger moved to Germany, where he provided caricatures for humor magazines. He taught at Germany’s Bauhaus, and exhibited with the Blaue Reiter Expressionists until he was exiled by Nazis who deemed his work “degenerate.” Exhibited worldwide, Feininger’s art has received awards from the Worcester Museum and New York’s Metropolitan Museum.
