Vintage original posters available at Art.com are generally 50 years or older, and originated mostly in Europe. They were commissioned by European advertisers to help market products and services including food, liquor, travel, and entertainment. The posters were printed with a technique known as stone lithography, which enabled artists and printers to achieve stunning graphics through the use of vibrant color. The posters were displayed in kiosks on city streets, on the sides of buildings and in the interiors of stores and restaurants.
Today, Art.com works with highly reputable collectors to select quality original posters that will add style and beauty to your home or business. |

testing Advertising posters were initially collected at the end of the 19th century by art dealers who believed they could sell them to customers as a new art form. Many times dealers would seek out poster artists and printers in an effort to secure print overruns for their galleries. The posters were originally produced in editions numbering in the hundreds, and sometimes thousands. However, very few originals survived, and most of the lithographer's stones from which they were produced did not survive past the first printing. This made it difficult, if not impossible to reprint. Some dealers and collectors went as far as removing the posters from outdoor displays. But most posters were destroyed in actual use when they were mounted for display and later discarded.
The number of vintage original posters remaining today is limited and their physical condition is less than perfect. Many of these prints have yellowed slightly with age and have acquired minor scratches or creases over the years. However, the authenticity of these imperfections add to the character of the prints and their rarity adds to their value. |

The value of a vintage original poster is based on a combination of factors. The most common factors are the physical condition of the print, the artist, the subject matter of the image, and the rarity of the print. Some people collect vintage original posters for the subject matter, some look for particular color schemes, while others prefer the style of a particular artist. Regardless of a collector’s preference, a poster that is in good physical condition will always command a higher price and the rarity of the print will add to its value. |

The popularity of vintage original posters has grown over the past decade and few dealers specialize in selling them, especially in the United States. Collectors come in many varieties. Gallery owners, home decorators, and hotel and restaurant owners are among the many collectors interested in acquiring these unique prints. They are typically displayed as the focal point of a room, often a living room, family room, study, or even in a kitchen. They are displayed by many business establishments to create a pleasing atmosphere for their customer. They are even displayed on popular television shows as part of the set design. Note, for example, the living room in the popular sitcom "Friends". |

Art.com works with reputable collectors to select quality vintage original posters. Because of their age, many of these posters are in less than perfect condition. To prevent these fragile pieces from future damage, we mount them on linen using an organic paste. The linen-backing is an acid-free, canvas-like material that helps to preserve the poster, protecting it from tearing and further deterioration. This is a traditional preservation method approved by the Professional Picture Framers’ Association (PPFA). |
