THE TWIN LIGHT ECHOES OF SUPERNOVA 1987A
When supernova 1987A exploded in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the Milky Way's nearest companion galaxy, the brilliant flash of light took about 170,000 years to reach us. Some light was deflected by two sheets of dust near the supernova, and it is seen long after the star has faded away because the scattered light covers a longer path to reach us. The dust responsible for the rings seen here lies in two distinct layers, about 470 and 1,300 light years from the supernova. The yellow color of the rings is an accurate reflection of the color of the supernova when it was at its brightest, in May 1987.
This picture was made from a series of three photographic plates taken at the prime focus of the 3.9m Anglo-Austrilian Telescope located on Siding Spring Mountain, New South Wales, Australia. The photograph was produced by combining images taken separately in red, green,
and blue light. This complex process was necessary because color films are not sensitive enough to record very faint objects. This picture is an accurate reflection of the colors of the universe, much as the eye might see them if it could be made a million times more sensitive.
