            The paintings of Maud Lewis (1903 – 1970) charm viewers with their childlike simplicity and pure, unblended colors. Although she suffered from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and lived in poverty for most of her life, Lewis derived great pleasure from her work. Born in Nova Scotia, she is one of Canada’s most popular folk artists. Her one-room house and a collection of her paintings of animals and outdoor scenes form part of a permanent exhibit at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
