About the Artwork

Andrew Wyeth’s most famous work and one of the great masterpieces of American art, “Christina’s World” is a haunting, nuanced rendering of the sweeping, uncluttered Maine landscape, as well as an homage to an indomitable spirit. Inspired by his polio-afflicted neighbor as she determinedly dragged herself toward her house, Wyeth created this painting and continued to paint Christina and her house in a series of works. Wyeth (1917-2009), a representational watercolorist, is known for meditative, neutral-toned works revealing the rustic beauty of rural America.
