About the Artwork

Born in Bellingham, Washington, and raised in Independence, Missouri, Koury didn’t set out to be an artist, but a biologist. Taking a painting class to fulfill a fine arts requirement proved to be a life-altering decision, leading to a B.A. in ceramics and then an M.F.A. in printmaking. A master of pastel, Koury's layered drawings glow with an intense color typically achieved only with paint.
