"If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been owing more to patient attention than to any other talent." -Isaac Newton
Isaac NEWTON Known as one of the greatest scientists of all time, Isaac Newton was a physicist, mathematician, and astronomer. He discovered the law of gravity, created the field of calculus, found that white light is composed of many colors, and developed three standard rules of motion still used today. Newton's laws of motion and theory of gravitation are cornerstones of modern physics. 1642 Isaac Newton is born December 25 in Woolsthorpe, England. 1665-1666 - Newton conducts his first investigations on gravity and motion. He determines the composition of white light while experimenting with passing sunlight through a prism. 1665 - An unexceptional student, Newton graduates from Cambridge University. 1668 - Newton creates the first reflecting telescope, an important contribution to the field of astronomy. He uses his telescope to observe the satellites of Jupiter. 1669 - Becomes a professor of mathematics at Cambridge. 1672 - Because of his invention of the reflecting telescope, Newton is elected to the Royal Society. 1687 - Publication of Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles) presents Newton's discovery of the laws of motion and the theory of gravitation. Principia has been described as "the single greatest contribution...by one man in the whole history of science." 1689-1690 - Serves as a member of Parliament. 1699 - Newton is appointed Master of the Mint and resigns from his Cambridge professorship. 1704 - Publishes discoveries on light and color in Opticks. 1705 - For his many achievements, Newton is knighted by Queen Anne. 1727 - Newton dies March 20 in London, England, and is honored with burial in Westminster Abbey. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
