A woman maneuvers through an urban wolf pack in Ruth Orkin’s signature photo, “American Girl in Italy, 1951.” Orkin (1921 – 1985) was renowned for her candid photos of Europeans and New Yorkers, and for the views she documented from her Central Park West apartment window for 30 years. Riding a bicycle from Los Angeles to New York’s World’s Fair, she stayed in the city and became a photojournalist for “Life,” “Look,” “Horizon,” and “Ladies Home Journal.” In Italy, she photographed the art student featured in her photographic story, “Don’t be Afraid to Travel Alone,” which was originally published in “Cosmopolitan.”

Ruth Orkin was lauded as on of “The Ten Top Women Photographers in the U.S.” in 1959 by the Professional Photographers of America. Her parents presented her with a camera when she was 10 and soon she was developing her own film. As a photojournalist in New York, her work appeared in Life, Look, and Ladies Home Journal. While raising her family, she photographed what she saw from her Central Park West apartment resulting in two large format photographic art books. Her monograph, A Photo Journal, was published in 1981, followed by exhibition and lecture tours. After a long battle with cancer, she died in New York City in 1985.
