The only thing that would have made this better is the ability to order the exact size of the original. The size I did order (48 x 36) is the size of the original, but the white borders on the print make it slightly smaller (at 44 x 33).

Henricus Hondius transformed cartography from a dry factual source into a richly elaborate art form with his “Antique Map Geographica, c. 1630.” One of the most famous Dutch cartographers, Hondius (1597 – 1651) initially assisted his father Joducus, who pioneered a method of reproducing spherical objects on two-dimensional surfaces. This map is regarded as an outstanding example of the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography. It is expertly illustrated with portraits of Julius Caesar, Claudius Ptolemy, Joducus Hondius and Gerard Mercator. The four elements are also displayed, as well as an allegorical image of the goddess Europa. This groundbreaking map depicts California as an island, and includes one of the earliest appearances of Australia’s northern coastline.

Hondius initially assisted his father, a pioneering cartographer who invented a method of reproducing spherical objects on a two-dimensional surface. Later opening his own firm in Amsterdam, Hondius created maps that solely depicted explored areas, whereas other cartographers illustrated unseen regions based on their imaginations. Hondius also devised double-hemisphere maps that set a precedent for cartography in the 17th and 18th centuries.
