- The Artist
“The Gates, Project for Central Park, New York City,” by husband-and-wife collaborators Christo and Jeanne-Claude, is a study of a large-scale installation project the couple envisioned. Known for enormous, ambitious environmental works, Christo created “The Gates” in Central Park with 7,500 saffron-hued fabric-draped, 16-feet tall gateways traversing 23 miles of park walkways. “The Gates” represent openings created in the park’s stone wall originally intended for steel-gate installation. This preparatory drawing of “The Gates,” which is a compelling artwork in its own right, is displayed in New York’s Guggenheim Museum.
