French academic painter Guillaume Seignac (1870-1924) uses classical imagery to explore love as a many splendored thing with his portrait of mother and child, "Venus and Cupid". Cupid, the god of desire, affection, and erotic love in Roman mythology, is the son of Venus, goddess of love and beauty, and of Mars, god of war. Cupid has become the personification of love and courtship in modern culture, and though sometimes depicted as a young man, Cupid is most commonly thought of as Seignac portrays him: a cherubic young child with wings.
