About the Artwork  
The heroism, drama and pageantry of Napoleon Bonaparte crossing St. Bernard Pass in the Alps, expressed in fierce movement and strong colors, are visualized here though the eyes of ardent admirer, Neoclassicist Jacques-Louis David (1748 – 1825). The preeminent painter of the French Revolution, David, granted a single portrait sitting with Napoleon, was so enthralled by the general’s personality that he glorified him in numerous paintings. In 1802, Napoleon made David a knight in his Legion of Honor.
