Pierre Auguste Renoir’s “The Luncheon of the Boating Party,” embodies the intimate charm, luminous color and harmony of form that made him a leader of the Impressionist movement. Renoir’s (1841 – 1919) famous “Boating Party” depicts a group of his friends, including his future wife, on a balcony overlooking the Seine at the Maison Fournaise, a place he frequented which welcomed customers from all different classes and socieconomic levels. Renoir captured its congenial atmosphere with a virtuoso command of gesture and expression rendered through skillfully varied brushstrokes, nuances of light and shadow, and masterfully detailed facial features.
