- The Artist
Donald Judd’s “Drawings at Castelli, 1976” demonstrated his artistic ideal that a three-dimensional object was not a painting or a sculpture, but a neutral form. Judd (1928 – 1994), initially a painter influenced by abstract Expressionists, eventually denounced painting as an outmoded medium. Challenging artistic conventions, he began utilizing industrial materials such as steel, concrete and plywood in large, hollow, boxlike structures arranged in repetitive geometric forms, and later designed furniture and architecture. Judd’s work was exhibited at renowned galleries worldwide, and he became a leading figure in the Minimalist Art movement, blazing a new trail for American sculpture.
