      Would have been a perfect cover for an opening in my fireplace originally intended for a tv. I love "Irises" and was so excited that I could have a tapestry of it decorating my living room; however, once received, the tapestry, though well made, was not even a mediocre depiction of the painting. I didn't expect true replication, but closer than this attempt. I returned it and am again searching for a solution to my fireplace dilemma.

            “Irises, Saint-Remy, 1889,” by post-Impressionist Grand Master Vincent Van Gogh (1853 – 1890), depicts the garden of the hospital where he was a recuperating, and was painted a few months before he died. Suffering from depression for most of his life, Van Gogh called this painting “the lightning conductor for my illness,” because he felt he could keep himself well by continuing to paint. The work was influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, containing strong outlines, unusual angles, and non-literal coloring. Although Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime, “Irises, Saint-Remy” was sold for $49 million in 1987, setting a world record.

            Vincent Van Gogh (1853 – 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist Master whose innovative artwork powerfully influenced modern Expressionism, Fauvism, and early abstraction. Astoundingly prolific, Van Gogh produced all of his work during a 10-year period, at one point, creating 150 paintings and drawings within one year. Painting outdoors, Van Gogh uniquely captured the nighttime nuances of light and shadow, and was also renowned for his paintings of sunflowers and irises. Tormented by mental illness for most of his life, Van Gogh created many of his masterpieces while he was institutionalized. Although Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime, he is now regarded as one of the most profoundly influential artists of the 19th century.
