- The Artist
“The Gates” is one of many studies husband-and-wife environmental artists Christo and Jean-Claude created in preparation for their enormous February 2005 installation project in New York’s Central Park. Draped in saffron-hued fabric, 7,500 16-feet tall gateways meandered through 23 miles of park walkways. On view for 16 days, “The Gates” symbolized openings in the park’s stone wall that were originally created for the installation of steel gates when the park was built. A work that can stand on its own as art, “The Gates” is a brilliantly flowing depiction of a monumental project.
