About the Art

Russian born Mark Rothko (1903 – 1970) introduced Abstract Expressionism, a new form of Abstractionism, into the art world. Characterized by bright bands of horizontal colors painted on enormous canvases, Rothko’s style was intended to engulf viewers in the artwork. Ambiguously named so that viewers could form their own impressions, he utilized a spare palette with the darkest shades placed at the top to symbolize the mental depression which plagued him. Rothko’s masterful use of color powerfully conveyed an intimate, intense message without subject matter and adhered to his credo that a good painting must have a deep meaning rooted in concepts of mortality and spirituality.

      Comments:

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend. I ordered about a week before Christmas Eve and I was very impressed with how quickly I received the product. It arrived a couple of days before Christmas Eve which gave me time to wrap it in time. I opened the box to check the quality of the print before wrapping and was very impressed! The colors were much more vivid than I expected and it was packaged really well - there was no way the print would be able to move during shipment and get damaged in transit. I ordered it mounted on board rather than in a frame and it was all set and ready to be hung up. My boyfriend was really happy with this gift and was able to hang it up in his living room right away.

        Comments:

It is hard to re-print Rothko works as posters because they lose the color saturation. Despite these difficulties, this poster looks great and conveys the essence of Rothko.
