About the Artwork
Rembrandt (1606 – 1669), a Baroque artist whose life was riddled with tragic deaths and financial ruin, summed up his own turbulent and troubled life with “Return of the Prodigal Son,” painted shortly before his death. Skillfully conveying feeling through gesture, expression, and a supreme command of light and shadow, Rembrandt meteorically rose to fame in his early 20s. Possessing a profound understanding of human nature and a brilliant technique which elevated the tragedy in “Return of the Prodigal Son” to universal significance, the work of Rembrandt is among the most highly valued in the world.
