About the Artwork
A majestic, feathery palm tree, streaming flower garlands and a profusion of greenery adorn the gilded “Interior of a Palm House” by Karl Blechen. The exotic work depicts the hothouse of Prussian King Frederick William III. A master of German Realism, Blechen (1798 – 1840) often painted outdoors, striving to create a literal interpretation of his subjects. During his career, he was appointed stage painter for the Berlin Royal Theater, a perfect outlet for his extraordinary and enigmatic style. Blechen’s use of brilliant colors and unconventional motifs made him one of the 19th century’s most important artists.
