About the Artwork
Edward Potthast (1857 – 1927) was an American Impressionist painter best known for his glowingly sentimental paintings of children and families frolicking at the beach. Born in Cincinnati, and studying art in Munich and Paris, he returned to Cincinnati and worked as a lithographer until relocating to New York City at age 39. Opening his own studio, he was a freelance illustrator for “Scribners” and “Century.” Soon painting full-time, his signature works were created during trips to Long Island’s beaches. A master at capturing the subtleties of color, reflected light and direct sunshine, Potthast’s idyllic works are replete with the joys of life’s simple pleasures.
