Published August 1, 1950Cecil Beaton was among the masters of the calculated dramatic effect in photography as well as in dress, set and costume design. Beaton won two Academy Awards for his work on My Fair Lady, for costume and set design. In 1950, he had just finished work on this two-bedroom apartment in New York's Sherry Netherland Hotel. The duplex, photographed by André Kertész, is filled with strong and clashing colors, such as scarlet flocked wallpaper and regal blue upholstery, that are counterbalanced by graphic displays of black and white. This image appeared in the August 1950 House & Garden. This photographic print is digitally printed on archival photographic paper resulting in vivid, pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display.
