The living room of Mrs. Juliana Force, former director of the Whitney Museum, is a study in the bold use of color and pattern. Bruce Butterfield designed the mother of pearl checkerboard door, complete with gilt floral ornamentation on the sides and painted dogs and stars in between the checkerboards. The calm mauve walls and sofa are surrounded by a round table set with colorful polkadot Venetian decanters. André Kertész photographed the room for the cover of the October 1947 House & Garden.
