Published April 1, 1938Constance Spry, the famous English florist, examines her display during an April 1938 House & Garden feature on floral arrangements. Two years earlier she had been the florist for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's wedding. Though most famous for her arrangements, Spry also spent much of her life working in civil service (she was the secretary for the Dublin Red Cross, among other jobs). She loved using unusual containers for conventional flowers (this one is a plaster incense burner, filled with roses.). The photo, taken by renowned photojournalist André Kertész, shows the juxtaposition between Spry's conventional style and her cutting-edge arrangements. The Constance Spry Flower School, which she founded, still exists in Surrey, England.Photo licensed from the Condé Nast Collection, home of The New Yorker, Vogue, Vanity Fair and other popular brands. Find this and other artwork at the Condé Nast Collection. This photographic print is digitally printed on archival photographic paper resulting in vivid, pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display.
