Tamara Toumanova came to be called 'The Black Pearl of the Russian Ballet.' George Balanchine choreographed the part of the Young Girl for Toumanova in his ballet 'Cotillon' and also featured her in 'Concurrence' and 'Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme.' She poses here with dancer Roman Jasinsky, who became the premier danseur for the George Balanchine Ballet in 1933 and went on to found the Tulsa Ballet. This photograph, by George Hoyningen-Huené, appeared in the October 1933 Vanity Fair.
