The faraway land of Pamukkale, Turkey, is the backdrop of this Henry Clarke photograph, which appeared in the December 1, 1966, Vogue. A model wears a striped silk surah dress by Malcolm Starr. The asymmetrical cut of her garb contrasts nicely with the rounded stone cliffs. The result is an unusually geometric composition, in which both model and location compete for the starring role.

Henry Clarke (1918-1961) took fashion photography to new heights of fantasy while taking the fashion world by storm. Capturing Striking the perfect balance between heady excess and refined elegance, was an image that permeated American, British and French Vogue for over three decades and secured its place as the fashionista’s bible. His work was held in such high regard that his American editor frequently sent him on assignment to exotic locations to shoot a 24-page spread for a single issue, an otherwise highly unusual occurrence.
