Jazz singer, tap dancer, and actress Frances Williams appeared in a number of Broadway productions, including The Cocoanuts, with the Marx Brothers. She is significant, if not well known, for delivering the first performance of 'As Time Goes By' in the 1931 musical Everybody's Welcome. The song became a classic when it was featured in the legendary film Casablanca. Dressed in a glittering gown and heels, cigarette in hand, Williams reclines on an ornate couch in this Cecil Beaton photograph, which appeared in the April 1931 Vanity Fair.
