This photograph alludes to a carefree cruise scene, but the setting was actually created in a studio. A model reclines under a large-brimmed pink sun hat. Cigarette in hand, she rests her red espadrille-clad feet on a rail resembling a ship's mast. A pair of raffia shoes, a red silk scarf, and eyeglasses hang from the rail. The John Rawlings photograph, one of thousands created by the fashion photographer during his 30 years with Condé Nast, appeared in the January 1, 1944, Vogue. Rawlings created more than 200 Vogue and Glamour covers and numerous feature photographs during the mid-20th century.
Photo licensed from the Condé Nast Collection, home of The New Yorker, Vogue, Vanity Fair and other popular brands. Find this and other artwork at the Condé Nast Collection.
This photographic print is digitally printed on archival photographic paper resulting in vivid, pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display.

Magazine covers materialized into multifaceted masterpieces within the lens of John Rawling's camera. His innovative work for Conde-Nast spanned three decades and the creation of more than 200 "Vogue" and "Glamour" covers, as well as a myriad of ad campaigns. Rawlings (1912-1970) single-handedly elevated commercial photography to an art form, and expanded the selling power and scope of the fashion press by imparting color and the innovative use of natural and artificial light.
