About the Artwork

Representing United States’ patriotism, honor and duty, James Montgomery Flagg’s “I Want You for the U.S. Army” poster is an exceptionally well-known image featuring the iconic Uncle Sam, created to support the war effort during World War I. A child prodigy, Flagg (1877 - 1960) was hired at age 12 to draw for St. Nicholas Magazine, based upon a few pencil sketches he’d drawn in Central Park, and he was a staff member of Life and Judge by age 15. Nearly every major publisher featured his artwork, and he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1980.
