Philippe Halsman set new standards for celebrity photography, combining Surrealism and psychology to help pioneer experimental photography. Halsman (1906 – 1979) fled to America with only a camera and a suitcase during the Nazi invasion of Paris, and was soon published on a record 101 “Life” magazine covers. Halsman provoked celebrities to reveal their inner self, and was renowned for cracking their facades by photographing them jumping. He also collaborated with painter Salvador Dali for 30 years, producing a famous photo of Dali, cats, water and furniture suspended in midair.
