Patriotism and feminism formed a strong united front in Howard Chandler Christy’s “Gee!! I Wish I Were a Man” Navy recruitment poster. Originator of the Christy Girl, a beautiful, idealized woman who radiated strength and independence, Christy (1873 - 1952) originally illustrated the Spanish-American War from the battlefront for a number of publications. While lesser known for his allegorical and historical works, including portraits of actors, presidents and socialites, Christy created more than 6,000 illustrations of his iconic Christy Girl for national magazines such as McClures, Cosmopolitan and Redbook.
