About the Art

The son of a French journalist and Peruvian Creole, Paul Gauguin was raised in Lima. Working as a merchant navy man and eventually a successful Parisian stockbroker, when Gauguin discovered the Impressionist movement, it ignited his desire to become a painter. He became the proverbial starving artist to devote himself to his self-coined style of “Synthetism,” which became a Post-Impressionistic style of modern art, depicting nature through massive simplified forms, large, bright planes of color, and primitive subjects. In fact, Gauguin’s art has all the appearance of flight from civilization, and it was in Tahiti that he discovered the flat forms, vibrant colors and untamed nature of primitive art that he committed to canvas with the utmost sincerity.

I got the next-to-largest size of this print so it fills a good portion of the wall in a small bedroom I use as a study. I'm fond of Gauguin but particularly fond of this extract from one of his larger paintings, as the composition is lovely, the red highlights work so well, and the expression on the main subject's face is so thoughtful and poised. It is gorgeous without any white around it and in the frame I selected for it, which is brown with some subtle gold highlights (I suggest avoiding the recommended frames - they aren't as nice for this print as Art.com's other frames and are more expensive). The large size meant I had to accept Art.com's acrylic substitute for glass, but it's invisible and looks fine anyway. The light in the study is not very bright, so this print forms a beautiful background that, interestingly, doesn't immediately attract the visitor's eye but casts an attractive soft glow over the room until the visitor discovers it and exclaims over it ("oh my - gorgeous!"). It would hold up in a bright room as well. I thought the price reasonable for a framed print of this size, delivery was timely and the packaging was very good with no damage whatever. Very very satisfied with this! On top of Art.com's excellent customer service it's confirmation that Art.com is the place to go for work of this kind.
