About the Artwork

“The Hay Wain” by John Constable gloriously depicts his ability to capture fleeting moments like butterflies, and re-create their breathtaking beauty. Originally from England, Constable (1776 – 1837) based this painting on a location in Suffolk. The cottage shown was rented by farmer Willy Lott, located behind Flatford Mill. Intensely studying the sky, Constable produced dozens of cloud sketches outdoors, ascribing them with precise details of time and wind direction to accurately re-create the cloud's transient quality. He painted the final work at his London studio. The piece did not sell in England, yet when it was exhibited in France, it was awarded a Gold Medal by Charles X.
