Rita Hayworth was born Margarita Carmen Cansino on October 17th, 1918 in New York City and attained fame during the 1940s as one of the era's top stars. In 1927, when Hayworth was eight years old, her father moved the family west to Hollywood, convinced there was a great future for dancing in the movies and that his family could be part of it. Hayworth danced at clubs and was a contract player at Fox, but didn't find success until she was signed to Columbia in the early 1930's. Even then she played only small parts until the early 40's where she finally found wider popularity in films like Cover Girl (1944), Gilda (1946) and The Lady from Shanghai (1947). Hayworth appeared in 61 films over 37 years and is listed as one of the American Film Institute's Greatest Stars of All Time.
