About the Artwork  
Claude Monet (1840 – 1925) was an French Impressionist genius who surmounted harsh criticism to shatter accepted artistic conceptions regarding composition. As in “Poppies,” the artist only painted patches of color and light that suggest an impression of a form, allowing the viewer’s eye to fuse them into meaningful shapes. Painting outdoors, Monet worked rapidly to capture the ever-changing effects of light, resulting in the free-flowing shapes, swift brushstrokes, and vibrant cascades of color in “Poppies.”
