“The Knight, Death and the Devil” by Albrecht Durer (1471 – 1528) is an exquisitely detailed, allegorical depiction of the difficult nature of leading a faithful life as depicted by the knight who resolutely rides toward death while flanked by the devil. Durer, often referred to as the greatest German Renaissance artist, was a painter and printmaker whose massive body of work includes altarpieces, portraits, religious works, and copper engravings. An admirer of Leonardo da Vinci, Durer often applied the artist’s theories regarding human proportions to his own work.
