Part of James Coleman’s exquisite garden series, “The Silence of Light” is a window into an enchanted, storybook realm replete with deep, mystical shadows and magical sequins of light. From Hollywood, California, Coleman originally worked in the Walt Disney Studios’ mailroom, later becoming a background animation specialist for several decades. His images were integral to such classics as “Winnie the Pooh,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Eventually, Coleman devoted himself to fine art full-time, creating luminous, Impressionistic works in which he attempts “to push the statement I am making to its ultimate, both in design and use of color.”
James Coleman began his career with Walt Disney Studios in 1969 at the studio's mailroom. His big break came after he entered a painting in the studio art show. Disney artists viewing his work, saw his potential and realized he had untapped ability and encouraged him to go into animation background painting. After his first film, "The Rescuers", he was promoted to Background Department Supervisor, a position he held for nearly seventeen years. While at Disney, James styled and worked on twelve films and over thirty short subjects. In 1991, after twenty-two years with Disney, James left to pursue a new career. He was ready to devote all of his time and talent to the love of his life, fine art. He works in oil, watercolor, gouache and pastel. His work is impressionistic, luminous, inviting and unique. Coleman's art is represented by some of the most prominent and respected galleries in North America, the Orient and the Hawaiian Islands.
