About the Art

Russian born Mark Rothko (1903 – 1970) introduced Abstract Expressionism, a new form of Abstractionism, into the art world. Characterized by bright bands of horizontal colors painted on enormous canvases, Rothko’s style was intended to engulf viewers in the artwork. Ambiguously named so that viewers could form their own impressions, he utilized a spare palette with the darkest shades placed at the top to symbolize the mental depression which plagued him. Rothko’s masterful use of color powerfully conveyed an intimate, intense message without subject matter and adhered to his credo that a good painting must have a deep meaning rooted in concepts of mortality and spirituality.

Comments:

This is a beautiful reproduction, however there were a few things left to be desired. One was that the measurements were not entirely correct. The width was off by less than 1 inch, which made framing difficult.

The image itself also was off by an eighth inch on the length. I'm not exactly sure where these discrepancies come from but i am guessing that the fondation beyeler produced the print with dimensions in metric, and Art.com changed them into inches but rounded the conversion to the nearest inch. This is not good because unless you measure the print yourself and get a custom frame to fit it, you could damage the print trying to put it into a frame that doesn't quite fit.

the other problem is that when the print arrived, there was a tear on the edge of the print. Small, but noticeable.
