Born in 1471 in Nuremberg, Durer was a goldsmith’s apprentice to his father. He was also an accomplished printmaker, engraver and theoretician, all affecting his superb sense of observation, proportion and realistic detail. His art is further characterized by his travels through Italy and an appreciation of the Italian art such as Mantegna and Bellini.
