About the Art

Jennie Augusta Brownscombe (1850 – 1936) was called “the Norman Rockwell of her era” for her nostalgic paintings replete with exceptional detail. Born in a log cabin in rural Pennsylvania, Brownscombe won her first artistic awards while still in high school. When her father died, she supported herself and gained national acclaim by selling prints of her oils and watercolors. Her sentimental genre paintings and colonial American history scenes were extensively reproduced by magazines, calendar firms and publishers. Brownscombe also founded the Art Students League. She exhibited her work in the United States and Europe, and continued painting until she was 81.
