Lucia Ooft, Maryika Schneider and Gladis Brouwn, typifies the multi-racial populatio of the girls' homeland, Surinam, the former Dutch colony in norther South America. Lucia is a student, Maryika a receptionist at the Torarica Hotel in Paramaribo and Gladis a teacher. Between them they comprise a racial and cultural heritage that includes portions of Negro, Amerindian, Chinese, European and Hindustani.
