New Faces In Congress - Mrs. Shirley Chisholm Is First Black Woman On Capitol Hill. Mrs. Shirley Chisholm joins the long parade of EBONY cover personalities as the first black woman in the history of the United States to become a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Elected in the newly-created 12th Congressional District of Brooklyn, N.Y. Rep. Chisholm beat her Republican opponent, former CORE National Director James Farmer, with the support of a large Puerto Rican segment, a fact attributed to her fluency in Spanish.
This stretched canvas print is the result of sophisticated digital printing technology in which the image is printed directly onto an artist-grade, 100% cotton canvas. The canvas is then expertly stretched around 1.5" wooden bars and carefully finished with hand-painted edges. An acrylic coating protects the stunning giclée print from dust, moisture and fading.
