This 1973 drama is directed by Claude Whatham and filmed in color. This film stars David Essex, Ringo Starr, Rosemary Leach, James Booth, Billy Fury, Keith Moon, Rosalind Ayres, Brenda Bruce, Robert Lindsay. Jim MacLaine is 18 and studying for his advanced level exams. But he finds his book work increasingly irksome. So much so that he packs a suitcase, hitches a lift to the coast, and soon finds a job. While working at a fairground he is invited to a university dance by his old friend Terry. He finds the people there irritating and 'square' and feels sufficiently 'left out' to quit the fairground and return home. Here he meets again Terry's sister Jeanette. They marry, and when their first child is born, Jim seems content. But it is not long before he once again walks out in search of freedom and irresponsibility.
