              I have always loved this picture, and chose it as a gift for my Scottish friend who lives in Spain.
              I was really disappointed at the quality of the print. The colours and definition are terrible. I have seen the original of this picture and know the print on sale here is an extremely poor copy, with none of the beautiful uses of light from the artist evident. I would have returned it but was taking it to Spain with me as a gift. I would NOT recommend spending money on this

              A painting as lyrical as its title, Joseph Farquharson’s “The Shortening Winter’s Day” is one of the artist’s many snowscapes populated with flocks of sheep. The exceptionally skilled Farquharson (1846 – 1935) often based his winter scenes on the woods and land surrounding his home in Finzean, Scotland. Farquharson’s love of his country and his attention to detail contributed to this work’s remarkable realism. When the painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy, it was lauded for “the ingenuity of painting, and for the power to convey the illusion of sunlight on snow, darkened by the shadows and the leafless trees behind which the winter sun is setting." The landscape was labeled "a tour de force."

              The magnificent artworks of Joseph Farquharson were his melodies and their titles were his lyrics. Often named after poetic lines from Burns, Milton, Shakespeare and Gray, Farquharson’s most famous works were exquisitely lit snowscapes dotted with sheep. Given art supplies at age 12, Farquharson (1846 – 1935) exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy just one year later. Farquharson lived in Finzean, Scotland, and based many of his remarkably realistic, detailed winter scenes on the woods and land surrounding his home. During his lifetime, Farquharson exhibited almost 400 paintings at numerous esteemed artistic societies and galleries.
